Ella Barak
The Rite of Spring
Ella Barak, 34, photographer, in her first painting exhibition.
The paintings have everything she sees and the camera does not, as though she sees and paints the alter ego. Sisyphean paintings with ballpoint pen on watercolor backgrounds.
Every painting is a ritual of days on end. Unsmiling, emaciated people, with sunken or invisible eyes that she ages to the point of shriveling. These weary people are decorated with bright, pretty spring flowers that gradually begin to take over, as if they are the main event. Dominant, almost violent, they overwhelm everything.
Ella created a world, created a people.
Each painting is a story in itself, like a part of an animation series that will come to life or a storyboard for a movie that is not funny and is not for children.
Ella Barak is an artist and a photographer. She holds a BFA in Photography and an MFA from Bezalel Academy. Her works have been featured in various photography group exhibitions. This is her first solo show. Barak specializes in family photography and photographs for "Haaretz" newspaper.
